An opera is a form of theater where music is primarily used and the parts or roles are filled by singers. A composer and a librettist usually work together to create an opera. It originated in Italy towards the end of the 16th century. Hence, elements of Romanticism are present. Romanticism glorified nature, emotions and focus on values such as love, love of the past, families and childhood. Romanticism lasted from 1770 to 1850.The Film "Opera"
The 1987 film entitle Opera was a film where the plot revolved around a young soprano who was involved in a number of murders that were committed inside the opera house by a masked killer. During the Romantic era, we saw several things happen:
rise of nation-states
increased geographic and even social mobility - this meant that because of better transportation people can now physically move from outlying areas to the centers of trade. This also allowed for social mobility. Lower classes could become middle classes with hard work.
new technologies - such as the trains and steamships, which were depended on fossil fuels also emerged.
there were longer life spans and better standards of living because of the increased commerce and better health facilitiesRomantic Music
Romantic music was characterized by music that was individualistic, emotional, dramatic and reflective of other trends during the Romantic period. Several famous composers include Beethoven, Schubert and Rossini. During this era, there was prevalent use of song cycles, concert etude, arabesque and even rhapsody. There was also emphasis on melody to sustain the interest of the listeners. Also observed during this period was a greater tonal range which meant going extremes, which was not that present prior.
